The Graduate Nurse Program Aims: To provide the graduate with opportunities to consolidate and integrate nursing knowledge into practice; To facilitate the graduate nurses transition to the Advanced Beginner level of nursing practice; To promote the continuing personal and professional development of the graduate nurse; To provide an environment committed to adult learning principles. Objectives: During the program the Graduate Nurse will: Formulate and achieve personal learning objectives for each clinical placement; Participate in learning opportunities provided by St Andrews including attendance at orientation, In-service sessions and workshops as appropriate to meet individual learning needs; Liaise with the appropriate clinical and/or education staff to enhance his/her own clinical practice; Use the performance appraisal process as a learning experience; Progressively demonstrate the ANMC competencies at the Advanced Beginner Level; Achieve the general hospital wide competencies for GNP, as specified in the GNP handbook; Achieve specific ward/unit competencies as appropriate; Participate in the Quality Improvement Program. Graduate Entry Requirements The candidate will: Be registered with the Nurses Board of South Australia as a general nurse Hold a current Nurses Board of South Australia Practising certificate Fulfil the definition of a Novice, ie a Registered Nurse who following a program of education preparation for the role has had limited situation experience and/or opportunity to consolidate knowledge and skills. Structure of the Program The program is of 52 weeks duration. Graduates will be offered Up to 10 full study days which will include hospital orientation, supernumerary time at commencement of clinical program and on change of clinical placement. Graduates rostered over 7 days will be entitled to 6 weeks-annual leave. This can be taken proportionally after the completion of 24 weeks work. Annual Leave must be negotiated with the Clinical Manager. Graduates will be required to undertake night duty during their graduate year. This is usually rostered between the first and second clinical placements. The Graduate Coordinator offers to work the first night shift with Graduates to provide support and hints on time management. Contracted hours are either full time or part time by negotiation at the time of employment. Continuing employment on successful completion of graduate year is considered. Clinical Placements Graduates can nominate to undertake one (1) two (2) or three (3) clinical placements during their graduate year. This is negotiated during the program as we recognise that preferences can change. Clinical placements can take place in the following specialty areas 2nd Floor: Urology and colorectal surgery and Gynaecology 3rd Floor: Haematology, Oncology, Breast surgery, Plastics 4th Floor: Orthopaedics, Vascular, ENT and Paediatrics. Critical Care Unit (mix of Intensive Care, Coronary Care and High Dependency) Day Patient Suite Theatre Recovery / Anaesthetics. Preceptors All new graduate nurses will be provided with preceptors for the initial four weeks of the first Clinical Placement; this can be extended as required. Preceptors will also be provided for the first 2 week of the 2nd clinical placement. During the preceptor period the graduate nurse and the preceptor will be rostered on the same shifts.
