St Andrew's Hospital Private Emergency Service (Acute Assessment Unit)  is operational between 8.00am and 10.00pm - seven days a week.

Our medical and nursing team are experienced emergency care professionals.

The Acute Assessment Unit ;

  • Provides a service for the assessment and management of acute medical and surgical conditions
  • Is also an acute injury service to assess and manage injuries (sprains, lacerations, fractures - including x-ray and specialist referrals if required)
  • No referral is required.
Patients requiring medical advice post discharge should contact their treating specialist.

If medical assistance is required outside of these hours, patients can contact the Hospital Co-Ordinator for advice on 8408.2663 or, if an emergency, please ring for an ambulance.

A facility fee of $175 is charged for non-admitted patients.  A discount fee of $140 for Healthcare Care holders applies.

The St. Andrew's Card has been developed to guarantee our patients an assessment in our Emergency Service - whether they arrive by ambulance or private vehicle during operational hours.  This applies until the expiry date shown on the card.  If admission is required, then a patient may be admitted to an inpatient ward or transferred to another hospital (depending on bed availability).

Readily accessible from any route to the city,
St Andrew’s Emergency Service is geared to provide a convenient, efficient service within comfortable surrounds.

Waiting times are significantly less than in emergency departments of public hospitals.

Patients can arrive by ambulance or private transport and may be referred by a medical practitioner, or be self-referred.

Entry to the Emergency Service is via the
front entrance at 350 South Terrace ~ short term car parking is available.

If you need to be admitted

We will inform your family and general practitioner that you are in hospital and generally assist in any way we can.

If you are insured
We will need details of your private health insurance, including fund name, level of cover and membership number.

If you are uninsured
You may wish to pay the anticipated costs of treatment at St Andrew’s Hospital or alternatively, be transferred to a public hospital once your condition has stabilised.

Work related injury
If your admission is as a result of work-related injury, your employer will be contacted to acknowledge the condition and accept financial responsibility.

Rest assured that emergency care is not delayed while any of these matters are resolved.

Follow up

We will keep your nominated general practitioner informed of your treatment details either during your attendance or as soon as possible afterwards.

A prescription will be written for any drugs needed after leaving the Emergency Service.
