Marking 2,000 MAKO Robotic Joint Replacements
February 11, 2026
South Australian orthopaedic surgeon Dr Rob Fassina has performed his 2,000th MAKO robotic joint replacement, a landmark achievement reflecting more than a decade of innovation and patient-focused care.
Dr Fassina introduced the first MAKO robotic system to South Australia in 2015 and has since been a pioneer in robotic arthroplasty, helping to shape the evolution of this technology both locally and internationally. He has also played a pivotal role in teaching and mentoring other orthopaedic surgeons in MAKO robotics techniques.
At the heart of this milestone is Irene, pictured above with Dr Fassina, who generously shared in the celebrations. Living with severe knee arthritis, she is hopeful for less pain, a faster recovery, and a return to everyday activities - a powerful reminder of why this technology, and the people behind it, matter so much.
The MAKO system is an advanced surgical technology that allows joint replacements to be precisely tailored to each patient’s individual anatomy. By combining 3D imaging with robotic-assisted precision, the technology helps surgeons place implants more accurately, which can improve mobility, reduce pain, and speed recovery.
The milestone was celebrated with the support of St Andrew’s Hospital’s theatre, nursing, and clinical teams, whose expertise is integral to every procedure.
Since introducing MAKO, Dr Fassina has helped transform thousands of lives, demonstrating how cutting-edge technology and compassionate care can work together to deliver better outcomes for patients.
